About the Clinic

The Pathology Clinic is the most comprehensive diagnostic pathology center in the region and serves as a reference laboratory for tertiary-level healthcare institutions as well as surrounding provinces and locations. Our clinic is staffed by two specialist pathologists and one resident physician, supported by a team of three laboratory technicians and one secretary to ensure continuity of services. It is the only center in Somalia providing structured residency training in pathology and makes a significant contribution to the country’s oncologic diagnostics and modern laboratory capacity.

The clinic actively operates a histopathology laboratory, a cytopathology unit, and an archive unit. Rapid reporting services for emergency specimens and critical oncologic diagnoses are sustainably provided six days a week.

Services Provided Within the Outpatient/Laboratory Setting

  • Acceptance of biopsy specimens, macroscopic examination, and microscopic evaluation

  • Cytological examinations (smears, liquid-based cytology, FNAC)

  • Evaluation of endometrial and endocervical biopsies

  • Gynecological screening cytology (Pap test)

  • Reporting of dermatologic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and head and neck biopsies

  • Pre-analytical consultation and clinician advisory services

  • Face-to-face consultation and case discussion regarding pathology reports

Histopathology Services

Histopathological diagnostic services for all organ systems are conducted in accordance with international standards, including:

  • Routine formalin-fixed tissue processing

  • Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining

  • Surgical margin assessment

  • Detailed evaluation of oncologic resection specimens

  • Comprehensive reporting in gastric, colorectal, hepatic, thyroid, lymph node, and breast pathology

  • Tumor staging (TNM) reported according to international protocols

Cytopathology Services

Our clinic is one of the most competent centers in the region in the field of cytopathology.

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology (thyroid, breast, soft tissue, lymph node, and superficial organs)

  • Liquid-based cytology and conventional smear techniques

  • Gynecological cytology (Pap smear)

  • Cytological evaluation of pleural, pelvic, and intra-abdominal fluids

  • Examination of bronchial lavage and washing specimens

Our practices emphasize:

  • Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE)
